Child Car Seat Safety Tip: Skip Puffy Winter Coats

DaveRat No Comments

SATURDAY, Jan. 23, 2021 — Puffy coats have their place, but it’s not inside a car seat.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) offers a variety of tips for keeping your little ones safe and warm while traveling by car.

The first is to avoid dressing children in puffy coats or snowsuits before buckling them in, because car seat straps won’t tighten enough. That creates a danger that the fluffy padding will flatten in the force of a crash and the youngster will slip from the seat and be thrown from the car. Puffy coats are not safe in a car seat or under a seat belt for someone of any age, the AAP said.

“Parents may not recognize the potential danger of buckling up a child who is wearing a puffy coat,” said Dr. Sarah Denny, a pediatrician with expertise in injury prevention. “A car seat harness or belt needs to fit snugly enough so that you cannot pinch the straps of the car seat harness. A safer alternative is to drape a blanket or coat over the car straps.”

The AAP offers additional tips, including staying warmer by storing the carrier portion of an infant seat indoors and packing extra socks, mittens and hats. If your child likes to suck his or her thumb, choose half-gloves with open fingers.

Dress your child in thin layers. This would include close-fitting layers, such as a long-sleeved body suit and tights or leggings, a warmer top and pants and, finally, a thin fleece jacket. Long underwear is a safe layering option in very cold weather, the experts said. Infants should wear one more layer than adults, so think about what you have on when you’re planning baby’s outfit.

Use a coat or blanket over car seat straps, but never use a car seat cover or other product that puts a layer under your child’s body or between the child’s body and the harness straps. Don’t use sleeping bag inserts or stroller inserts because they haven’t been crash-tested, the AAP warned.

Be sure harness straps are tight enough. If you can pinch the straps, the car seat harness needs to be tightened to fit snugly against your child’s chest.

Also be sure to leave baby’s face uncovered to avoid trapped air and re-breathing, the group advised in an AAP news release.

Pack a bag with extra blankets, dry clothing, hats, gloves and non-perishable snacks in your car in case of an emergency.

Get an early start, they suggested. This can help if the baby is uncooperative about being buckled in and can also give you extra time to get where you’re going.

“Pediatricians can help answer parents’ questions about car seats and how to properly use them,” Denny said. “Just as you would use layers of clothes to keep your child warm, you can use layers of prevention to keep your child safe.”

UK Prime Minister Says British COVID Variant May Be More Deadly

DaveRat No Comments

FRIDAY, Jan. 22, 2021 — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned on Friday that a new, more infectious coronavirus variant first spotted in the United Kingdom late last year could also be more lethal.

The new variant, which has since been found in numerous countries including the United States, was already known to be far more infectious than the original coronavirus. Some studies have suggested it is 50% to 70% more transmissible, the Washington Post reported.

But to make matters worse, Johnson and his advisers suggested during a media briefing that the new variant may kill more people who are infected with it.

“In addition to spreading more quickly, it also now appears that there is some evidence that the new variant — the variant that was first identified in London and the south east [of England] — may be associated with a higher degree of mortality,” Johnson told the BBC News.

Still, Sir Patrick Vallance, the British government’s chief scientific adviser, described the data so far as “not yet strong.”

“I want to stress that there’s a lot of uncertainty around these numbers and we need more work to get a precise handle on it, but it obviously is a concern that this has an increase in mortality as well as an increase in transmissibility,” Vallance told the BBC News.

He noted that the data suggest that among 1,000 men in England aged 60 or older, the original virus would kill 10, while the new variant would kill 13 or 14, the Post reported. That amounts to roughly 30% greater mortality.

U.S. federal health officials have said recently that the British variant is likely to become dominant in this country by March.

Until now, public officials have stressed that the new variant did not appear to make people sicker or increase deaths.

Despite the concerning development, Johnson and Vallance both stressed that early evidence shows existing vaccines remain effective against the original virus and new variants.

In addition to the British variant, new mutations discovered in South Africa and Brazil are also being watched closely. Just this week, a new study suggested that people who have had COVID-19 or have been vaccinated might still be able to be infected with the South African variant, which hasn’t yet been spotted in the United States.

“I think we should be alarmed,” senior study author Penny Moore, an associate professor at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases in South Africa, told CNN. Her team’s results were published on the preprint server BioRxiv, and have not been peer-reviewed yet.

“Based on Penny’s data, it’s likely that the vaccine is going to be somewhat less effective, but how much less effective we don’t know,” David Montefiori, a virologist at Duke University Medical Center, told CNN. “This is the first time I’ve been concerned about a variant partially evading the immune response and partially evading the vaccine.”

Both experts stressed that people should still get the vaccine. It’s extremely effective against other forms of the virus, and they think it likely will still give some level of protection against the new variants.

Cognate beefs up cell, gene therapy manufacturing with new plants in U.S., EU

DaveRat No Comments

With the demand for cell and gene therapies mounting, CDMO Cognate BioServices is looking to swiftly expand its U.S. headquarters with two new facilities—and it’s not stopping there. Its dedicated gene therapy unit, Cobra Biologics, is plotting its own scale-ups in Europe.

Stateside, Cognate is building out its global manufacturing facility and headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, to the tune of 250,000 square feet of space and 500 new jobs, which will be added over the next four years, a spokesperson said via email.

A new commercial manufacturing plant at the site will focus on on cellular and advanced therapies. The upgrades, which also include a new distribution center, will nearly double capacity at the CDMO’s home base, Cognate said.

Join the Launch Readiness for Medical Affairs & Communications Teams Summit to learn best practices in taking a structured approach to enhance medical affairs activities surrounding a launch and increase knowledge and communication with thought leaders.

The company has kicked off construction of the 170,000-square-foot manufacturing facility, aiming to get it up and running “as quickly as possible,” the spokesperson said. The new 80,000-square-foot distribution center should be open for business “in the coming weeks.”

The expansion will add more than 500 jobs in Memphis over the next four years, the spokesperson said. The company declined to say how much money it’s investing in the new facilities..

Across the pond, Cobra Biologics, Cognate’s gene therapy unit, is embarking on a multiphase upgrade of its plasmid DNA services. The company will add new clinical and commercial DNA facilities at its existing European operations in Sweden and the U.K., teeing up a fourfold jump in high-quality DNA manufacturing, Cobra said.

Cognate picked up Cobra in early 2020. The CDMO currently operates two European plants: a DNA, microbiota and fill-finish plant in Matfors, Sweden; and its Centre of Excellence for Advanced Therapies in Keele, England, which focuses on DNA and viral vector production, according to the company’s website.

As for when Cobra’s expansions may come online, it’s complicated, the spokesperson said.

“These are complex builds that require coordination of different groups and ultimately regulatory agencies,” he said. “So, some of them will come online this year, and others are planned to come online at different times within the next 12-36 months.”

“We are planning the capacity to match the demand in the industry and can speed up some of these if needed, and as needed by our clients,” he added.

COVID-19 Is Killing Newspapers, Creating Information Crisis

DaveRat No Comments

Keeping up with the torrent of news over the last year has been overwhelming for all Americans. But it’s an especially difficult challenge for local newspaper editors like Reed Anfinson, who not only owns and publishes Swift County, Minn.’s Monitor-News, but writes nearly every news story it publishes, too. Anfinson, who also owns two other papers in nearby counties, has worked virtually seven days a week since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, including through a battle with the virus himself. For all his hustle, he still wishes he had time to write more about the people whose lives have been disrupted by COVID-19—or the money to hire reporters. While there’s more news to fill the pages of Anfinson’s papers this year, his publications have had to shrink to survive as cash-strapped businesses have pulled ads, forcing the papers to shed pages and cut staff positions and hours. Anfinson says more cost-saving measures will be necessary, but it will be hard to figure out what to do next. “We are so lean, we don’t have anywhere to cut,” he says.

Local news outlets like the Monitor-News were in rough shape even before the pandemic. More than 2,000 U.S. newspapers have closed in the last 15 years, and 1,800 communities that had a local news outlet in 2004 didn’t have one at the end of 2019, according to research from the Hussman School of Journalism and Media at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Today, more than 200 counties do not have a newspaper or other source of “credible and comprehensive” information, and half have only one newspaper. COVID-19 has only hastened local outlets’ demise, costing communities what could otherwise be valuable sources of local information about viral spread, vaccinations and more. Among six chains that own hundreds of local papers, ad revenue dropped 42% during a quarter of 2020 compared to the year before, and circulation revenue dropped 8%, according to a Pew Research Center analysis. More than 60 local newsrooms shuttered over the course of 2020, while others have endured layoffs, furloughs and other cutbacks, according to journalism research organization Poynter.

As local news outlets disappear, they leave behind an information vacuum that makes way for the spread of misinformation on social media and through “pink slime” media platforms, which appear to be organic local news but instead feature mostly algorithmically-generated articles repurposed from other outlets and public data sets. The consequences of the country’s local news drought have become especially apparent during the pandemic. Over the last year, political polarization and misinformation has caused some people to doubt even basic facts of the pandemic, from the accuracy of death rates to whether measures like face masks can slow the virus’ spread. In some communities, where many residents have pushed back on scientifically-proven measures like mask-wearing, local reporters have been one of the only bulwarks for the truth. Anfinson, for instance, has been hard at work dispelling rumors about the virus—including falsehoods about improper hospital use of COVID-19 funds—and taken on critics of social distancing and state mask mandates. But his efforts have cost him.

“I know that my constant writing about that has lost me some subscribers and businesses at the newspapers,” Anfinson says. Nevertheless, he has pushed on with his coverage, with two key goals in mind: keeping his communities safe, and helping them recover from the pandemic’s economic devastation. If he fails, the towns his papers serve could be left without any local news coverage at all. “We know there’s nothing that replaces us,” Anfinson says. “In small town America, the newspaper is the only source of information.”

The pandemic has also threatened some publications that were on sound footing at the beginning of 2020, like the weekly North Coast Journal in Humboldt County, Calif., where the newsroom shrunk from five employees to one full-time and one part-time employee last year after advertisers pulled away or closed. “There was a point early on where we didn’t know—there was major doubt about whether we would survive this as a company,” says Journal News Editor Thadeus Greenson. But the Journal pulled through after receiving a Paycheck Protection Program loan and rejiggering its advertising strategy. It was able to bring back three editorial staff members, and has offered invaluable reporting through the pandemic, publishing stories on food insecurity in the county and covering otherwise under-reported communities, like local indigenous tribes.

In the COVID-19 era, the consequences of the local news crisis is most obvious when looking at the editorial resources available in communities where small newsrooms have survived. As the virus first struck the U.S. last winter, Echo Day, managing editor of the Leader in Covington, Tenn., for example, built a digital hub for outbreak information. There, readers could find out about school and festival closures, see where to pick up donated food, and read stories from the local community, like one about a woman who died of COVID-19 after resisting masking and social distancing guidance. Without the Leader, those tools and coverage may have never existed. “This was a project I felt strongly about doing, giving people this information,” says Day. “Because they wouldn’t get it otherwise.”

Day and the Leader have faced challenges brought on by the pandemic, too. At the paper’s worst moment, four employees were quarantined with COVID-19. At one point, only her and another staff member were on the editorial team. Keeping up with pandemic news, combined with the regular news cycle, was just “overwhelming,” says Day. “There was so much information, and so much change,” she adds.

The news cycle didn’t stop when Day herself contracted COVID-19 in October. Despite enduring headaches, a fever and shortness of breath, Day kept the paper going by working from home. She didn’t want to leave it all to one colleague, and she feared that the public wouldn’t otherwise get the information they needed.

“There’s no other newspaper covering us. It’s just us, and it’s up to us and to be here and to cover all of the events that take place here—not just the big things that would catch the attention of the Memphis media,” says Day. “So I feel that responsibility to people.”
